NEWSLETTER SUMMER 2010
Dear All
I hope you are well and that we soon have some good weather during these summer months. There are lots of community events coming up so please read through to see if anything interests you.
SHOPPING BUS
The Ham and Petersham SOS weekly shopping bus has been a great success, passengers say it's 'absolutely blooming marvellous!' We have a great team of jolly drivers and assistants to help shoppers with their shopping etc. The bus leaves every Thursday between 10:00 and 10:30, collects passengers from their homes, takes them to Sainsbury’s, and then home again. If you are interested in this service please contact me at the office. There is a small charge of £2.00 per round trip to help with hiring the mini bus.
HOPE MONTHLY EXCURSIONS
Although the recent canal trip was a little disappointing, the monthly HOPE excursions we are running are proving to be a hit. We have a lot of interesting new destinations coming up so please take a look at the Events page and let me know if you are interested in booking any of them. Suggestions for new places to visit are always welcome.
VISIT AND CHAT (BEFRIENDING)
We have been given a small grant to set up a befriending scheme in our area and will be working in partnership with Richmond Consortium for this project. A volunteer would come to your home and sit and chat, or possibly take you out somewhere for the afternoon. If you would enjoy meeting someone new to talk to and share experiences with about once a fortnight then this new scheme might be of interest. Just let me know if you would like more information.
HAM AND PETERSHAM IN WARTIME
Ham Amenities member Len Chave is researching local history during 1939-45 in Ham and Petersham for eventual publication by the Richmond Local History Society. Len is looking to meet residents with memories of the time, and is particularly interested in bomb damage, the British Restaurant in South Lodge, public air-raid shelters, the Grey Court nursery school, and events and entertainments held locally. If you were living in Ham or Petersham during this period, or have any information that might be of interest, Len would love to hear from you. Please let me know if you would like me to put you in touch.
HAM FAIR – Saturday 12th June
We did quite well at Ham Fair this year, and raised a total of £314.90. We were also given a donation of £43.74 from Eye Care Opticians on Ham Parade. Thank you to everyone who helped us raise this money. It is essential to us to help pay for our telephone and administration costs.
SOUL IN HAM
On the second Saturday of the month, local children spend the day giving back to the community. Their activities include a free car washing facility, garden clearing for less able residents, litter picking and a drop-in cafe all day. Great work being done by the youngsters in Ham. Why not pop in and have a 'cuppa'!

GREY COURT ALLOTMENT WORK DAY – 19th June
HUG (Ham United Group) is holding a community workday at the Allotment at Grey Court school on Saturday 19th June. There is lots to do, including planting and weeding and generally preparing for the allotment Open Day on 17th July. Anyone interested in going along to help would be most welcome.
ELGAR £20 NOTES TO BE WITHDRAWN -30th June
The old-style £20 note, with a portrait of Sir Edward Elgar on the backis due to be withdrawn from circulation on 30th June 2010. Although Banks will be willing to exchange the notes for newer ones, shops will no longer accept them.
Well that is about all for now. I hope to see you soon.
